It is traditionally seasoned with dried chilies and spices and slowly cooked until perfectly tender. I first shared the recipe back in April 2015 but have since decided those photos needed some updating.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an easy-to-make dish, nothing complicated and it doesn&#8217;t use hard-to-find ingredients. It yields super tender results.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vegetable oil <\/strong>&#8211; this is used for browning the roast.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Beef broth <\/strong>&#8211; chicken broth can be substituted here if that&#8217;s what you have. Beer is also used in traditional recipes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chipotle chilis <\/strong>&#8211; these add a tasty spicy kick. Freeze any remaining from the can for later use. Adobo sauce or dried chiles can also be used.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Garlic <\/strong>&#8211; as always I only recommend fresh garlic.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cumin, cloves, oregano, bay leaves <\/strong>&#8211; these spices and herbs add a delicious depth of flavor.<\/li>\n<li><b>Salt and pepper &#8211; <\/b>season with a fair amount of each so it doesn&#8217;t taste flat.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fresh lime juice<\/strong> &#8211; some barbacoa recipes call for apple cider vinegar but I like the fresh lime much better here.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hot sauce<\/strong> &#8211; only if you need more spice!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Warm corn tortillas<\/strong> &#8211;
